Pellets vs wood pizza oven – which is better?
Is there one right answer to this question?
Well, I don’t think so…
Pellet ovens usually work differently from wood ovens, and each type will serve different needs.
Generally speaking, pellet pizza ovens come in small sizes only.
The main reason for that is because, unlike wood chunks, pellets can’t produce enough heat to get medium or big-sized ovens to reach the proper temp.
On the other hand, pellets burn much longer than wood chunks, which requires less fuss. In addition, according to a comparison we made, firing an oven on wood pellets will be 3-times cheaper than wood chanks.
So, which one should you pick?
Well, here is my take:
If you are fine with cooking pizzas no bigger than 12″, pellet pizza ovens will be a cheaper and more convenient choice for you.
On the other hand,
If you are like me and like to cook large pizzas or be able to cook a few pizzas at a time, wood ovens come in much bigger sizes and will be a better choice for you.
Buyer’s guide – what should you look for in a pellet pizza oven
Choosing which pellet pizza oven is the most suitable for you can be confusing, right?
I know, all of them seem the same with different price tags.
Well, that’s not quite the case. Pellet pizza ovens come in different qualities and features, and you should pay close attention to those on the oven you are going to buy.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through the most important factors and things to consider before buying your next pellet pizza oven.
First thing first, the price:
When it comes to pellet pizza ovens, they usually aren’t overpriced and shouldn’t cost you more than 400 USD.
If you are interested in an oven that comes with a cheap price tag, I won’t be excited too soon.
Yes, I know, sometimes there can be a difference of 100 $ between a well-known brand like Ooni to just a cheap oven (that might work perfectly fine).
But I want to remind you that your oven is going to work on pellets, which at the end of the day cost more money.
The well-known companies work on their ovens to be more fuel-efficient, and their ovens usually consume up to 2-times less pellets compared to some low-quality ovens.
A simple calculation shows that it will cost you about 3$ more per each hour of use.
As a result, in the long term, you will end up spending more money on a lower-quality oven. In that case, you might be better off going with an oven like the “Fyra” rather than a low-quality one.
Let’s say you’ve just got your new oven, and for any reason, it got damaged on its way or after a few uses. You don’t want to be stuck with a broken oven, and no one you can contact, right?
In rare cases, pizza ovens get damaged after being exposed to extreme temps for long periods of time.
If you will be one of those unlucky owners, you will face two options, whether you went with a reliable company that offers a warranty or you are left without coverage, and you’ll need to buy a new one.
That is why I think going with a reliable company and getting those few years of warranty is defiantly something you will want to look for in an oven.
Yea I know, the well know companies charge a couple more bucks but trust me, being covered is definitely worth that expense.
3. Proper design
Understanding how a proper pellet pizza oven should be designed, you’ll need a quick brief of how a pellet oven works.
To efficiently heat an oven, this is the required process:
Pellets need to be burnt in the back of the oven while air flows through proper entries in the back, through the body of the oven, and out through the chimney.
For proper airflow, the oven should have a front lid, a chimney, and air entries in the back of the oven.
In addition, if you will want to lower the heat mid-cooking, closing the chimney will decrease the airflow which will lower the flame. Having an adjustable chimney is also a must-have in a well-designed pellet pizza oven.
4. Proper Insulation & safety
Proper insulation is more important than you think. I’ll give you two different reasons why it’s so important.
The first one is about safety. An oven must be well-insulated so when your family or guests gather around the oven, no one will accidentally touch it and get burnt badly. You also don’t want your surface to get exposed to those temperatures – it will ruin it.
The second reason is more technical – heat retention. If your oven isn’t properly insulated, heat will struggle to remain inside and that will cause to problems:
1) It will take forever for your oven to heat up
2) Your oven will consume much more fuel than it needs to, and you will end up spending more money on pellets.
So why do you need a well-insulated oven? So you can keep your lovers safe at all times, and in the meantime, you won’t rip your pocket on pellets.
5. Adjustable temperature
There are two ways to adjust a pellet pizza oven, the first one can be done in all pellet pizza ovens, and the second one only comes in some ovens.
In all the ovens, you can just add more pellets and the fire should increase but you won’t be able to lower the heat.
Some ovens come with a feature that allows you to have more control over your flame – a closable chimney. This feature allows you to open and close the chimney and adjust the airflow of the oven. When the chimney is fully open, there is proper airflow in the oven and the flame is maxed. As you close it, the airflow decreases, and the flame goes down as well.
Reading owners’ reviews on the product is one of my favorite ways to estimate how good a certain product performs.
Do you really need to do it?
Well, to be honest, I’ve already done that for you. One of my research steps is to go through customers’ reviews and see how good a product performs.
My tip for you is to join a community of an oven you think of buying, and see what the owners think about it, this step helped me a lot when I looked for an oven back in the day.
7. Size & Weight
The size of your oven will determine your pizza sizes. Personally, I won’t go with an oven that will cook me pizzas smaller than 10”. I think that ovens that are capable of making 12” pizzas will work just fine for you.

The truth is, pellet pizza ovens don’t need a lot of features. That’s why many don’t have them. A few essential features in every oven are an adjustable chimney and the ability to close the oven with a lid.
Besides that, some ovens offer a few features that will make the cooking process easier and faster, like a turning stone or an air blower.
Do you really need those features? I don’t think they are crucial, but they are nice to have.
So, what feature should you look for?
If you are locked on cooking on pellets, there aren’t other things you should look for in my opinion.
On the other hand, if you will want to have the option of cooking on different fuels, you will probably be better of going with a multi-fuel oven.
Making homemade pizza doesn’t end with just buying an oven. For example:
- To launch the pizza in the oven you will need some sort of a pizza peel.
- If you want to launch in the pizza at the right time, you’ll need to know the temperature in the middle of the stone. You must own an infrared thermometer to do that.
- If you are interested that your oven will last as long as possible, you must cover it and keep it well maintained.
- To light up the pellets you will need either a blow torch or a fire starter. Trying to light them with a regular lighter will make it much harder.
- When serving the pizzas, you will want to slice them. Personally, I find pizza cutters work better than kitchen knives.
- The point is, that when you search for a pellet pizza oven, you should keep in mind you will need at some point a pizza peel, an infrared thermometer, a blow torch, and a pizza cutter.
You might want to search for a deal that offers them all together or separately get yourself the most important accessories.

To get a clear answer, you might need to test the different flavors and decide which one works best for you.
6. Can you use normal wood pellets in a pizza oven?
Most pellet types can be used in a pizza oven, although there are some types that won’t suit your oven.
Depending on the oven you have, oversized pellets or too small ones won’t work for you. If you buy unsuitable pellets, you will probably face problems like them falling right onto the ashtray or they even won’t fit into your oven.
